How Data Storage Units Relate

Data storage prefixes (kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte) are defined as decimal, 1,000-based multiples under the SI prefix standard, the same as this page uses. Some operating systems instead report file and drive sizes using 1,024-based binary math under the same unit labels, which is why a drive's reported size can look smaller than its labeled capacity; the binary values have their own correct names (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB).
