How Power Units Relate
Power units measure the rate of energy transfer. The watt is the SI unit; horsepower is an older unit originally used to compare steam engines to draft horses, standardized today as exactly 550 foot-pounds-force per second. Watch for metric horsepower (PS) and electrical horsepower, which are similarly named but not identical to the mechanical horsepower used on this page.
